Door opens to new winemaking hub

On 1st May the eight-hectare Seresin winery, including a 2.6-hectare organic vineyard, will be sold to Marlborough winemakers, Ben Glover and Rhyan Wardman. Glover is the winemaker at family winery, Zephyr, while Wardman, who began his winemaking career at Seresin, recently left Giesen where he held the position of General Manager Marlborough.

“We want to create a space that will allow producers to make wine that displays the real fabric of Marlborough.”The friends plan to re-christen the winery “The Coterie” and invite small Marlborough producers to join them at the re-vamped facility to create a hub of collaborative winemakers who will feed off each other and ultimately “raise the bar” for wine quality in Marlborough.

The Coterie will initially crush around 1300 tonnes of grapes, but that capacity will be increased to about 3000 tonnes in the future. Seresin is an investor in the new venture and will be a cornerstone client of the operation using about half the current capacity. Zephyr will also shift its winemaking to The Coterie.

“I was excited when the opportunity arose to purchase the Seresin winery. Michael Seresin and the Seresin brand has always pushed the boundaries and remained committed to producing premium, small-batch, organic wines. The winery provides the perfect site to continue that vision, allowing us to create a facility that promotes single-site identification while stimulating intellectual expression. We want to create a space that will allow producers to make wine that displays the real fabric of Marlborough,” says Wardman.
